The piano has a dual role. It can be a melodic instrument and a solo instrument. When one hand plays accompaniment motives the other hand is usually performing a melodic pattern. Very often the piano accompanies a solo instrument that can be the voice or an instrument such as the flute, the clarinet. At times the piano can accompany a variety of melodic instruments.

“The piano is one of the most prolific melodic instruments. It can play melodic patterns and also provides background accompaniment to melodic instruments such as the voice.” Edmond Saint-Jean

The vocal exercises are the same as the piano melodic exercises. One is produced by the voice and the other by the vibration of the strings hit by the piano’s hammer. The voice however, is very flexible. It uses the alphabet letters, the vowel sounds the dynamics, and create a vocal continuum.

The voice is a melodic instrument.

The voice and the piano are both melodic instruments that follow various patterns. Similar to the piano the voice goes through rigorous exercise patterns to reach the professional level desired. For instance, a good breathing exercises increase the choice to always stay in tune. Especially when using prior knowledge of studies to facilitate the vocal exercise. The five vowel sounds reemphasize the opening of the mouth. [ah, ay, ee, o, oo] .

The breathing exercises consists of two keywords: inhale and exhale. Inhale on the count of 5, using the technique of the straw. We inhale without moving our shoulders and chest – hold for a second or two then exhale as a psssss sound until no more air is left – repeat 2 or 3 times. Posture is also very important. Voice training modalities also apply to many other vocal processes such speech.

The piano and the voice are awesome.

The affinity between two musical  instruments is such that they are inseparable in theory and practice that we cannot cease to enjoy their musical journey. For both instruments the elaboration of melodic patterns combined and shared by such awesome instruments cannot be minimized. The relationship between the voice and the piano is inspiring and intertwined. The piano uniquely helps train the voice with al its levels of difficulties.
